As The Economy Shrinks, Waistlines Could Expand!

by fitnessmantra on November 28, 2008

That the economy is rapidly deteriorating is not news to anybody but what is eye-opening is that as the economy starts to contract, waistlines around the country could expand! The explanation is simple: while one would expect people to buckle down and spend less on everything including food, this does not translate into people losing weight for the simple reason that cheap food is also often unhealthy. The MSNBC article, “Surprise: Lean times may actually make you fat” explains:

Rising unemployment, higher food prices and dwindling savings may exacerbate the nation’s obesity problem, sending already high rates ballooning as consumers turn to cheaper, less healthful choices ranging from boxed mac ‘n’ cheese to fast-food dollar menus. [MSNBC]

Measure Up And Eat Well!

I have previously written multiple times (one, two, three) about the unfortunate correlation between poverty and obesity and the same holds true now. In lean times, families cut back on the more expensive grocery items like fresh fruits and vegetables and instead choose fast-food.

So what are some healthy yet inexpensive food items in these tough economic times? Here’s a quick starter list:

  1. Eggs
  2. Frozen vegetables (in many cases at least as nutritious if not more than fresh produce!)
  3. Canned Beans
  4. Soups
  5. Milk
  6. Cottage Cheese
  7. Carrots/Potatoes/Canned Tomatoes
  8. Rice/Cracked Wheat
  9. Ground Beef

What foods would you add to this list? In these uncertain times how has your own diet changed? I would love to here from you in the comments section!

I’d definitely add oatmeal to the list, particularly if you avoid the packaged instant variety.

Beans are on a hype now. Still looks great. Thanks for the article.
