Yes, that headline made no sense me either, but apparently it’s true! WebMD reports on a Duke University study that uncovered a weird human behavior that is called “vicarious goal fulfillment”. Gavan Fitzsimons, who was in charge of the study says:
“We’ve found that the presence of a healthy item leads people to choose the one that is the least healthy on the menu,” Fitzsimons tells WebMD. “Just seeing the healthy item and considering it makes you feel you’ve done your duty. It’s crazy, but it’s human.” [WebMD]
What is weird is that this behavior is displayed most by the very same people who otherwise exercise very high self-control. Once they see the healthful option, it’s almost as if they are somehow satisfied that they have done the right th thing and are now free to do something else – and that something else becomes choosing the worst options from the menu.
One thing this shows is that there are several things going on in our minds that are out of our conscious control and it’s up to us to make a real effort to stick to our goals notwithstanding the subtle changes appearing in restaurant menus.
