Walk down the bread aisle in your local grocery and you are likely to be confronted by a plethora of nutrition labels with “High Fiber”, “Low Carb” and “Eat this or else …!” printed boldly on them.
The important thing to remember about any whole wheat product is this: since manufacturers are required to list ingredients in order of their quantity (weight) in the finished product, a whole wheat product will always have one of the following listed as the first ingredient: “whole grain”, “100% whole wheat”, “100% stone ground whole wheat” or something very similar.
If you see something like “unbleached wheat flour” or “unbromated wheat flour”, beware since these are just clever ways of saying “Foolish consumer, I have stripped the whole grain of all its goodness and made it highly refined”.
As for fiber, a good measure is that each slice should have atleast 2g of it. Also make sure the dough is not doused in High-Fructose Corn Syrup (you do know why it is harmful, don’t you?) before it’s baked.
The FitMan household uses Arnold Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat Bread from their Whole Grain Classics Series.
Each slice has:
- 90 calories with only 1.5 g of fat (no saturated or trans fats)
- 4g of protein
- Best of all: 5g of fiber! This means a 2-slice sandwich will make up 40% of your daily fiber needs!
This brand is easy to find in most large stores and tastes great with peanut butter! That’s a solid carb-protein-fiber combination that’s hard to beat!
Did you get your fill of whole grains today?

Hi, I went to get the Arnold “Double Fiber Bread”, I was surprised to see that it had high fructose corn syrup it in? Is that ok?
Thanks
Hi Jennifer,
Yes, I know this product has some HFCS and infact I have switched recently to another brand called “Ultimate Grains Nutribran” bread (from HS Bakery) which has 5g of fiber and 5g of protein in every slice with just 4g of sugar and no High Fructose Corn Syrup! (they use sugar, raisins and molasses instead). I am yet to find a site giving more details about this product so I am thinking of posting soon about this product, myself.
But even if one can find a few products without HFCS it is quite difficult in today’s artificially sweet world to completely eradicate HFCS (yet). One quick tip you can use is that if HFCS is not listed among the first 3-4 ingredients and if the total sugar content in one serving is less than about 5-6g then it is probably OK to consume although you should continue to look for alternatives.

I live in Fort Payne AL…WHERE is the closest store I can purchase the DOUBLE FIBER bread??
Hi Pam,
I went to the website of GW Bakeries (makers of Arnold bread) and tried their outlet locator but couldn’t find any outlet nearby. However I have been able to find their breads in most large grocery and department stores like Stop N Shop, Price Rite etc. Hope you find them near your place.
Another bread I have been using recently is the “Ultimate Grains Nutribran” (as mentioned in comment #2). You could try looking for this variety, too.

Have you noticed that a slice is now 100 calories? Arnold has made the slices thicker! The regular 100% Whole Wheat went from 90 calories per slice to 110 for the same reason. There are now 16 slices in a package instead of 18, so the price has effectivelly gone up and consumers are getting fatter. As far as I’m concerned the slices were already to big!!
Who is “HS Bakery” you mentioned above…the people that sell “Ultimate Grains Nutribran†Bread?
Where did you buy it?
Hi Kathy,
HS Bakery’s website is http://www.hsbakery.com , but as I have mentioned, there is absolutely nothing useful to be gleaned from their site.
I buy Nutri-Bran bread from my local Price-Rite store (a subsidiary of Shop-Rite, I assume)
You should be able to find it in other stores too.

There is a similar bread made my Nature’s Own. It even says “double fiber.” It has a purple label. You can get a 2-pack at Sam’s Club. It’s great stuff. 2 slices for 90 calories.
I recently have discovered Ultimate Grains Double Fiber bread. My daughter is allergic to MSG and HVP(has epileptic seizures from it) and most organic breads are not too tasty. I stopped buying bread altogether because of the long-g list of ingredients most breads have. The Ultimate Grains has no artificial flavors, additives and preservatives. Great find.
I love the Ultimate Grains bread. The Hearty Superseed is also quite tasty - 6 grams of protein, 15 carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 110 cal, and no HFCS. The 100% Whole Wheat is quite good, as well.
H&S is a family owned Baking Company Based in Baltimore MD. They also own Schmidt Baking Company that supplies the same items as Ulitmate Grains under the Roman Meal Label. You can purchase Roman Meal items made by Schmidt Baking in all major chains stores in Maryland, Northern VA. Southern PA. Delaware, Central and Southern PA. and Central and Southern NJ. Enjoy.
Can you tell me where to find Ultimate Grains breads in the New York/New Jersey area? Thanks for your help.
Hi Lila,
I am not sure where you would find this bread in NY/NJ. Like I mentioned above, I find it in my local Shop Rite/Price Rite store.
To date I have not found a better whole-grain bread that uses all-natural products and I am very happy with this bread.

I get Rudy’s Organic breads. NO HFCS! This is a good site.
Hi Lila,
I love the Ultimate Grains bread! I have found it in some Shop Rite’s in NJ (for example - I have found it in Kearny Shop Rite, but not in Lyndhurst Shop Rite). Shop Rite actually had it on sale a few weeks ago - I’d call around to your local Shop Rites to see if they have any in stock.
Good luck!

I love Ultimate Grains bread too. But when ever I see them in shop rite, it’s almost going to expire in 5 days. Is that normal? Or shop rite just doesnn’t carry fresh bread.
I’ve been looking around and would like to buy some Arnold Bread. So far I haven’t been able to find any one that would sell to me. No place around here sell it. Thanks
Ultimate Grains bread is the best tasting bread I have ever had. I love the grain, omega 3, flax & honey one. It is very hard to find. Shop Rite used to carry it in Lincoln Park, Parsippany and West Caldwell, NJ. They still sell it, but only Double Fiber and Multi-Grain. Not as good as the Omega-Flax. Went on H & S website to find out where they distribute, but I could not find that out.
Desperately seeking Ultimate Grain omega bread.
Please help.
I finally found your Whole Wheat Bread and Honey Wheat Bread both are truly very good. Sure glad I found them.
just tasted your ultimate bread all natural and am amazed what a difference eating such a great product makes to ones taste bulbs..no other bread will do from now on..for nutrition and for taste.i live in a elderly unit with about 50 peopleand believe that if these people could taste this product they would never go back to bland, tasteless bread again. if possible could you send coupons or samples so could give them out.elizabeth quesenberry 58 riverview terr. chicopee, mass. 01013..’Ultimate Bread’ is Worth the Price’ try it you’ill see…
