QT #1: Drink fruit juice with extra pulp

11

May

I am starting a new series in this blog called Quick Tips. Typically these will be no more than a couple of sentences and it will always be about making a minor change in your lifestyle leading to a huge change in your health and fitness levels. I have also created a new Category for these types of posts called (what else?) Quick Tips (You can access all previous posts in a category by clicking on the name of the category).

“The next time you drink fruit juices like Orange Juice, choose the one with extra pulp.”

Researchers at Purdue University found that people stayed full longer when they drank thick drinks than when they drank thin ones — even when calories, temperatures, and amounts were equal. “Thicker drinks help to fight off hunger longer,” says Richard Mattes, Ph.D., the study author.

Break that fast

The very first post on Fitness Mantra and I choose a boring topic like breakfast, you ask? Well, consider this: One study found that people who did without breakfast were at four times greater risk of obesity compared to those who started the day off right. (Via HealthCentral)

Breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day as a simple search on Google will reveal. Especially of interest are the following benefits of a good breakfast (from SparkPeople):

  • a revved up metabolism started early so that it burns the maximum number of calories to fuel your activities
  • fewer total calories consumed throughout the day
  • an increased leptin (an appetite suppressant) output

Even if you don’t have more than a few minutes in the morning for an organised breakfast, the following are great options:

  • Whole wheat bread with natural peanut butter and blueberries
  • Regular (unsweetened, unflavored) oatmeal with almonds/walnuts and blueberries/strawberries
  • One tall glass glass of low-fat or fat-free milk and an orange.
  • 2 eggs (eat atleast one yolk - your body is hardly affected by the cholesterol in the food you eat - it’s the cholesterol your body makes on its own that you need to be worried about) - either scrambled or made into an omelette using cooking spray with a slice of whole wheat bread and 1/2 glass of low-fat or fat-free milk.

There you have it folks - the first step toward a lifetime of fitness begins with the very first meal of the day. Welcome to this journey - together we can achieve our goal of making fitness our mantra - a way of life!
