QT #5: Eat, but first take a seat.

29

May

It’s a scene only all too common these days. It’s your company’s holiday party and you are standing around with your colleagues in your best suit. Your hand is just reaching out for another one of those heavenly stuffed mushrooms that are being handed out by the waittresses when suddenly you realise that you have absolutely no idea how much you have eaten so far. And you think it’s alright, because you don’t feel anywhere near full.

Well, the reason could be that you have been eating while standing up for the past hour or so.

Eat, but first take a seat.

Research has shown that much extra food in consumed on the run and sitting down while eating helps you think about how much you are consuming.

QT #4: Eat more often

25

May

This is probably going to be the shortest post on Fitness Mantra, but I want the message to be clear:

“Eat more often.”

Try to eat atleast 6-7 times a day, your intake consisting of 3 moderate meals and 3-4 snacks.

There are two important things to note:

  1. Never, ever have a single huge meal. Space out your required calories throughout the day, but I repeat, never, ever splurge on one huge meal. The reason is simple: the body can only deal with so many calories at a time and the rest is stored as - you guessed it - fat. If you just have to have that big cake-slice after an already good-sized meal, split it with a loved one. Double the pleasure, half the guilt!
  2. Avoid going for long periods of time without eating (yes, break that fast!) and especially avoid drastic calorie reductions. Your body is more amazing than you can ever imagine and if it senses a drop in calories over a sustained period of time, it will trigger what is commonly called a “Starvation Response” - a slowing down of your metabolism to conserve energy. This will result in a reduction in your weight loss and also reduce the nutrients you are getting leading to many problems.

Eating more often and spacing out your intake calories is the single best way to ensure a balanced intake of energy and a reduction in fat storage (indeed, why should the body store fat as an energy reserve, if it is assured a steady stream of food?)
