QT #7: Make exercise a part of your day

17

June

Thought health and fitness was all about nutrition? Well, that is partly true, but there are atleast 3 parts to the regimen that guarantees a life of fitness: good nutrition, good exercise and good rest. In Fitness Mantra, I have mostly covered nutrition related articles till now since I feel that is the most important of the three. Soon, however, I will will begin articles on exercise and rest/relaxation (not as easy as it sounds!).

Today’s Quick Tip simply gives you a few easy ways to include exercise in your day when you don’t have time for a regular gym workout:

  1. Park far away from your office: This is easy: Just pick the least coveted spot (it’s the one farthest away from the “Reserved for the CEO” sign). Then as you are walking to your office building, count your steps - every step is one step closer to your fitness goal!
  2. Use the stairs: Unless you are working on the 57th floor of the Empire State Building, try using he stairs as often as possible. Elevators and escalators are for wusses!
  3. Walk your dog: Why pay a dog-walker to get his/her exercise when you can do it yourself and save some money? Go out, have some quality time with your pet, breathe the fresh air and get some of your muscles moving all at the same time.
  4. Walk around when on the phone: It’s unbelievable how the calories add up when you are waiting for your cell-phone company’s customer service rep and listening to their on-hold music (”Golden Hits from the 80s” of course).
  5. Take up a hobby: Salsa dancing, gardening, Vietnamese kickboxing - these are all silent calorie burners.

The idea is simple - anything you do that forces you to be active and raises you heart rate (even temporarily) will boost your metabolism, build your muscles, burn your fat and make you a fitter person.

What other ideas do you have to include exercise in your day? Share them here in the comments section.

QT #6: It might be thirst

04

June

If you ever feel hunger pangs between your regular meal or snack times, then it’s probably a good idea to pay heed to Quick Tip #6:

Feel an unnatural hunger burst? It could just be thirst.

Increasingly, research shows that hunger and thirst have very similar symptoms and especially at non-scheduled eating hours, it makes sense to reach for a glass of water instead of that Snickers bar from the vending machine. The water will also aid in digestion and cleansing your system.
