Nutrition For Kids

Nutrition For Kids is a site that promotes healthful eating habits in children from a young age. They are offering a free booklet that describes great ways to make it easy to include whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes in childrens’ diets.

The booklet, called “Nutrition For Kids - A ‘Get Healthy’ Approach to Achieving Weight Goals”, is colorful, pertinent in today’s environment of childhood obesity and also comes with a few quick recipes at the end which you can use as a basis for your own creations.

You can either get the booklet by regular mail or simply download it (PDF).

Highly recommended.

KFC sued over trans fat use

June

When commenting in his monologue about the KFC bucket of chicken wings, Jay Leno, The late night comedian remarks “How fat are we getting, that we now need to eat in buckets?”

Well, I guess Kentucky Fried Chicken is not laughing anymore. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has sued KFC over the excessive use of hydrogenated oils in the making of its products.

The class action suit, filed in Superior Court of the District of Columbia, asks that the court prohibit KFC from using partially hydrogenated oil, or that at the very least, signs be posted in KFC outlets notifying customers that many KFC foods are high in trans fat.

A typical 3-piece Extra Crispy combo meal, with a drumstick, two thighs, potato wedges, and a biscuit has a staggering 15 grams of trans fat-more trans fat than an individual should consume in a week.

You can read the final complaint (PDF) and also check out the KFC nutrition guide (PDF) (reads more like a horror story).

In retaliation, KFC says the accusations are meritless and has this to say on its nutrition page:

We believe eating sensibly, combined with appropriate exercise, is the best solution for a healthy lifestyle. KFC offers a variety of menu items for those that want lower fat, lower calorie choices, including Tender Roast and Honey BBQ Sandwiches, corn on the cob, BBQ baked beans and green beans.

That’s right - like people go to KFC to eat the green beans!
