Wendy’s removes Biggie name, keeps same size

June

Emergency boardroom meeting at Wendy’s:

Big guy: I just read that we did a good thing by agreeing to remove hydrogenated oil from our products.
Little guys: Yes yes!
Big guy: OK then, to balance that, we need to do a bad thing - what can we do?
Little guys: Ummmmm…..
Big guy (thumping the table): Bad thing! Bad thing!! Bad thing!!!
Little guys: We could do a bad thing and make it look like a good thing!
Big guy: I like it! Tell me more.

And so it happened … In a startling anti-climax to yesterday’s good news that Wendy’s was reducing hydrogenated oil from their products, they have announced today that they are removing the “Biggie” drinks. Before you get all excited it is my sad duty to inform you that “medium” is the new “biggie”.Yes: all they did was change the name:

A 32-ounce beverage, formerly called a Biggie, is now a Wendy’s medium drink. A 42-ouncer, called the Great Biggie in some markets, is the new large.
The same is true with fries. The 5.6-ounce Biggie fries is now a medium, and the 6.7-ounce Great Biggie has become the large.
Wendy’s former 20-ounce medium drink and 5-ounce medium fries are now called small.

Denny Lynch, Wendy’s spokesman, said the decision to drop the Biggie name came after research showed consumers were confused by it. He said the company will be better served by going to a simple small-medium-large format.

Yeah that’s right - so let’s make large the new medium and medium the new small. And so the fact is that what used to be small, is no more available. Excellent.

Just so you know, the large size is 42 ounces (3.5 regular sized (12 oz) cans) and has 410 calories.
(Gulp).
