The image says it all. Sometimes it’s not easy determining serving sizes (and atrocious hotel portions don’t help either!) so most of us try to make do with estimating sizes or just trusting our “gut feeling” (pun not intended). But both of these can result in bad judgment calls, so here’s an easy quick tip for today:

One serving of fruits and vegetables should fit within the palm of your hand.

The cost and benefit of eating healthful foods

Eating fresh healthful food is always going to be more expensive than the mass produced, refined, processed, packaged foods. We already know that (if you didn’t and you have just started eating the Fitness Mantra way, then beware, you might see a slight increase in your grocery bills!).

But what is the true cost and benefit of such a good diet? Is it worth it?

Dr Gourmet, a website that deals with (what else!) healthy eating has a nice article titled The True Cost and Benefit of Eating Healthy. The truth, as the article says, is really deeper than simply the cost of food. The study is based on reseach published in an Australian study (read the abstract). The goal of their research was to look at how well a Mediterranean diet improved people’s health after they had suffered their first heart attack.

The article reveals that although costs increased by an average of about $700 for every Quality Adjusted Life Year, when you considered that the excess works out to just about $10 a month, it’s well worth it.
